Bond's 8 yachts: what the famous spy sailed on - Lady on the boat

The MI6 secret agent pursued bad guys on fast boats, wooed girls on light sailing yachts, and infiltrated the lairs of villains on elegant leisure yachts.

“Delos” (ex ‘Aurora’) in “From Russia With Love”.

The 293-foot Delos played the role of headquarters in the 1963 movie From Russia with Love, starring Sean Connery as Agent 007. A German-built cruise ship that had fallen into disrepair was purchased by Christopher Wilson, a former technology entrepreneur. In 2008, he discovered that the yacht was for sale on Craigslist. So for the past 16 years, Wilson has been engaged in a massive restoration project and hopes to turn the historic vessel into a museum and boutique hotel.

The fictional yacht MY Flying Saucer, built in 1980 for Saudi arms dealer Adnan Khashoggi by Benetti, has its own Hollywood backstory. After the yacht was featured alongside Sean Connery in a 1983 movie, the Sultan of Brunei seized her, sold her to Donald Trump, and she became Trump Princess. In 1991, another Saudi billionaire businessman, Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal, became the owner of the vessel. He renamed the yacht Kingdom 5KR and keeps her almost permanently in Antibes on the Côte d’Azur.

“Trafalgar” (ex ‘Moonmaiden II’) in the movie ‘The Living Daylights’

In the pre-title sequence before the credits, Bond parachutes onto this yacht after falling off a cliff near the cliffs of Gibraltar. Moonmaiden II was built in 1974 at the Beykoz shipyard in Turkey.

Now this 70’s yacht known as Trafalgar is looking for a new owner through Ocean Independence at a price of €2,350,000.

Riva Aquarama Special and Manticore Yacht in the movie ‘Goldeneye’

In the 1995 film “Goldeneye”, Pierce Brosnan made his first appearance as Agent 007 in typical Bond style as he rode out of Hercules harbour in Monaco on the stylish yacht Riva Aquarama towards the three-deck motor yacht Manticore at anchor.

Behind the scenes

The 142-foot yacht Northern Cross, launched in 1991 by the Swedish company Marinteknik Verkstads, was chosen for the role of Manticore. In the film, the yacht Manticore belongs to the Janus crime syndicate and is used by Xenia Onatopp.

The yacht was designed by Thor Hinders and Per Kavli and built in 1991 at the Marinteknik Verkstads AB shipyard in Sweden. For many years it was owned by Finnish businessman Jorma Lillbacka.

The yacht has a top speed of 24 knots thanks to two large Caterpillar engines, which were installed on the locomotive in the USA but converted for use on the yacht.

Up to 10 guests can be accommodated in 5 cabins: 1 master cabin, 2 double cabins and 2 single cabins. The crew cabins can accommodate up to 8 people. The yacht has a bar, salon dining area and three sundecks.

The yacht is currently for sale for €2,295,000 by Infinite Yachts.

“Soufrière at Casino Royale.

The film Casino Royale marked the beginning of a new era for the film franchise. The movie, released in 2006, was the first film in which Daniel Craig portrayed his character in a dignified way, and he did it very spectacularly: just think of Bond sailing into Venice with Vesper Lynd (Eva Green) on the 54-foot Soufrière from British shipbuilder Spirit Yachts. The vessel is currently listed for sale by Berthon International at $534,000.

While Bond was sailing the Grand Canal on the Soufrière, his nemesis Le Chiffre (Mads Mikkelsen) set up a floating lair on a posh 108-foot Sunseeker Predator yacht called Casino Royale. With a speed of up to 45 knots, this sporty vessel is built for short cruises. For example, between St. Tropez and Monaco in the summertime. She is currently being chartered by AeroVanti in Florida.

Spirit 46 in “No Time To Die.”

007

At the beginning of the movie, Bond sails his yacht through the clear waters around his home in Jamaica before docking at a pier in a private cove and coming ashore with a shotgun and two freshly caught red snapper fish.

The Spirit 46 is built by Spirit Yachts, a British company founded in 1993 by Sean Macmillan and Mick Newman, which offers a wooden alternative to mass-produced hand-built yachts. Each yacht is unique and is manufactured at the company’s base in Suffolk on the east coast of England. The Spirit 46 is a versatile combination of practicality and style, ideal for light racing or coastal cruising.

With a displacement of only 4.5 tons, the boat is light and easy to sail alone. The yacht has long sides, a flat deck and an overall length of 46 feet, with sleeping berths for four. The Yanmar diesel engine provides a maximum cruising speed of 18 knots. After the Spirit 54 yacht was chosen for Vesper and Bond in Casino Royale, production returned to the company for No Time To Die. The 46-foot Spirit 46 was chosen as the perfect vessel for Bond: for filming, sailing the bay or travelling the world at any given moment. The yacht The Happenstance was chosen for filming, with the first scenes shot on April 29, 2019 in the waters off Banana Wharf near Port Antonio, Jamaica. Further shooting took place on May 2 and May 8.

“Aria 1” (ex ‘Regina’) in “Skyfall”.

Continuing his passion for sailing yachts, Daniel Craig’s character sails to his death with Severine (Berenice Marlohe) in the 2012 movie Skyfall. The fictional yacht Chimera “was played” by Regina, a 183.1-foot schooner built by Turkish company Pruva in 2011. By the way, much of the filming of Skyfall on Regina was done in the Göcek and Fethiye area of Turkey.

The gulet-style vessel was a popular charter boat until it was sold in 2018. It is now based in Greece under the new name Aria 1.
